Description

Aegis Pit & Fissure Sealant is a light-cured, BisGMA/UDM pit and fissure sealant that is filled 38% by weight and contains amorphous calcium phosphate (ACP). According to the manufacturer’s description, ACP technology releases calcium and phosphate over time and converts into hydroxyapatite during low pH episodes, resulting in the remineralization of tooth structure. The opaque, off-white material is applied directly to an etched surface and light cured for 20 seconds. The material cures to a slightly opaque tooth color for visibility on enamel. The standard kit contains three, 1.2-ml syringes of sealant; one, 3-ml syringe of Bosworth 35% Acid Etch; applicators; and instructions. Twenty-three consultants evaluated Aegis Pit & Fissure Sealant in over 350 clinical procedures. This product received an 86% clinical rating.

Product Features

The easy-to-use Aegis Pit & Fissure Sealant is well packaged in a complete kit. The sealant is easily placed on the tooth from the standard syringe. Many consultants commented that the diameter of the syringe tip is large and the low-viscosity material flows too quickly in some cases. Good surface wettability allows for a nice flow into fissures with very few bubbles and voids. The opaque, off-white color provides good contrast with enamel, allowing easy placement. The concept of ACP was very well received by the consultants, many of whom found the concept of remineralization to be a very strong positive. Overall, 60% of evaluating consultants found Aegis Pit & Fissure Sealant equivalent to or better than their current sealant. Fifty percent would purchase the sealant for use in their own practice, and 67% would recommend it to a colleague.

Clinical Tips

• Dispense a small amount slowly into the central groove and spread it over the surface with an explorer.
• Use a smaller diameter, pre-bent syringe tip for easier placement.
