Description
D/Sense Crystal is a one-step, dual-action dentin desensitizer and cavity liner. It reacts with dentin to precipitate micro crystals of calcium oxalate and potassium nitrate. It may be used under crowns, bridges and other restorative materials, or as a desensitizing treatment for areas of cervical erosion. The solution contains water, potassium binoxalate and nitric acid. It is compatible with most types of temporary and permanent cements including zinc phosphate, polycarboxylate and glass ionomer. Eugenol does not affect D/Sense Crystal. It is supplied in unit-dose syringes with SofNeedle™ applicator tips. Sixteen editors used D/Sense Crystal on over 100 patients during a 6-week evaluation period.
Editors’ Observations
Manufacturer’s Instructions
Instructions for use are clear and thorough. Editors appreciated the description on how the product functions to provide desensitization. A small, laminated instruction card with illustrations is preferred. Note: Revised instructions illustrating how to hold the syringe for optimum control, are now included in the kits.
Delivery System
Editors appreciated the simplicity of the unit-dose, direct-application system. The low viscosity made the liquid difficult to control during placement; however, excess material did not cause any apparent damage to gingival tissue.
Application to Cervical Areas
The time efficiency of the single-step system received excellent ratings. The cotton tip on the thin syringe made access to cervical areas very easy, but the low viscosity of the material made it difficult to control placement.
Sensitivity During Treatment
Minimal sensitivity was experienced during placement of the initial layer, and no sensitivity was experienced while applying the second and third layers.
Post-treatment Reduction in Sensitivity
Immediate reduction in sensitivity was experienced initially after placement on cervical areas. Long-term effectiveness is unknown at this time.
