Description

Gluma Desensitizer is a low-viscosity, transparent solution used for the treatment of hypersensitive dentin and for preventing sensitivity after tooth preparation. The 5-ml dropper bottle of Gluma was previously evaluated in THE DENTAL ADVISOR PLUS, Vol. 7, No. 1, January-February 1997. This current evaluation focused on the new single-dose applicators. Each sealed foil pouch contains a 0.075-ml vial of Gluma Desensitizer with a pre-inserted, micro-tipped applicator. Gluma Desensitizer contains HEMA, glutardialdehyde and water and acts by precipitating plasma proteins to occlude dentinal tubules. Apply for 30-60 seconds, then air dry and rinse. Multiple applications may be necessary at the same appointment. Nineteen consultants used the single-dose applicators of Gluma Desensitizer in over 550 cases.

Product Features

Consultants found the instructions for Gluma Desensitizer to be straightforward, and they appreciated the simple, single-dose dispensing system. All consultants found it was very easy to apply and reported excellent results in preventing sensitivity with direct and indirect bonding procedures. The effectiveness under crowns and for root sensitivity was also rated very good. In some cases, the single-dose applicator did not provide sufficient solution for multiple teeth. Ninety-three percent of consultants rated Gluma Desensitizer as the same as or better than their current desensitizing agent, and 95% would both purchase and recommend it.

Clinical Tips

  • During restorative procedures, apply any necessary pulpal protection or etchant to the tooth before applying Gluma Desensitizer.
  • Burnish into the dentin with the brush and repeat application. Thin the pooled liquid with air and rinse before placing bonding adhesive.
  • Sensitivity may originate from interproximal surfaces, so it is important to apply the agent to these sites.
  • Do not use near the pulp or for cases of pulpitis.
  • Product can be irritating to the skin and gingiva.
