Description

OptiBond SOLO Plus is a 6th-generation (Type I) self-etching adhesive system with an optional dual-cure activator. It is indicated for light- or self-cured applications such as bonding direct and indirect restorations, posts, and cores. The adhesive is 15% filled by weight with 0.4-μm particles. OptiBond SOLO Plus is supplied in unit-dose packaging. The primer and adhesive (0.1 ml each) are contained in a dual-chambered plastic tube, color-coded to differentiate the two solutions. The supplied fiber-tipped applicators readily puncture the chamber seals. For dual-cured applications, a drop of activator is added to the adhesive chamber. No phosphoric acid etchant is necessary for this bonding system. Self-etch priming requires 15 seconds followed by brief air thinning. Two 15-second applications of adhesive followed by 20 seconds of light curing complete the bonding procedure. Twenty-four consultants evaluated OptiBond SOLO Plus in over 680 restorative cases. This product received a 92% clinical rating.

Product Features

Consultants found OptiBond SOLO Plus easy to use, and the unit-dose packaging was among the most-liked features. Lack of postoperative sensitivity received good to excellent scores from 100% of consultants. Only one bond failure was reported. The odor of the solution received a fair rating as did the total time required for the bonding steps. Instructions were rated very good; the steps printed on each pouch were convenient chairside. Fifty-seven percent of consultants indicated that they would switch to OptiBond SOLO Plus, and 59% would recommend it.

Clinical Tips

  • For indirect use, keep the layers of the bonding liquid very thin to avoid interference with seating.
  • The applicator brush may be bent to about 45¬∞ with pressure against the chamber wall when removing it.

Editors’ Note: The original evaluation was published in THE DENTAL ADVISOR, Vol. 21, No. 1, January/February 2004.

Optibond Solo Plus can also be used without the primer as a 5th-generation bonding agent in conjunction with phosphoric acid etching of enamel and dentin. In 2007, the use of Optibond Solo Plus with its self-etching primer was replaced by Optibond All-In-One.
