Description
Ortho-Coat is a fluoride-releasing, light-cured resin intended to coat orthodontic brackets and surrounding enamel. The purpose of the product is to prevent decalcification, staining and discoloration of the teeth during orthodontic treatment. Ortho-Coat can reduce the negative effects of food and bacteria collecting directly around the brackets. It can also protect the oral mucosa and soft tissues from the sharp edges of brackets, bands and wires. Dispensing is done directly from the syringe, and curing time with a halogen light (minimum of 300 mW/cm2) is 20 seconds. Ortho-Coat uses patented chemistry (EMBRACE technology) to improve the hydrophilicity of the resin material in a moist environment. This chemistry improves tooth wettability and marginal integrity. The kit contains two, 5-ml syringes of Ortho-Coat; 20 applicator tips and instructions. Eighteen consultants evaluated Ortho-Coat in 268 applications. This product received an 82% clinical rating.
Product Features
Overall, consultants felt that Ortho-Coat was easy to use and was as effective as wax in preventing soft tissue irritation from the edges of brackets. Application from the syringe is easy, and the viscosity of the material allows it to flow well and cover the brackets effectively. Several consultants reported some difficulty in removing excess resin if not cleaned off before curing. None of the consultants reported debonding of the material during the evaluation period. The prevention of decalcification was not observed due to the limited evaluation period. While not all consultants identified a need for the product, 44% would recommend Ortho-Coat to a colleague and switch to it.
Clinical Tips
- Blow air on the resin to thin it and prevent it from blocking bracket ties and slots.
- A brush may be used to apply the material for more precise placement.
- Ortho-Coat would ideally be placed at the initial bracket placement appointment.
- It also could be added at a later time if indicated. Use a microbrush to remove excess resin before curing.
