Description
Zoom2 is an in-office, tooth whitening system utilizing hydrogen peroxide with ultraviolet light. The kit is indicated for lightening dental stain and yellowing derived from aging, tobacco use, coffee, tea, colas, and red wine. Some lightening of gray stains from tetracycline or other chemicals may be produced. The Zoom2 Chairside Whitening Gel is available in concentrations of 20% or 25% hydrogen peroxide with amorphous calcium phosphate in a dual-barreled syringe. Each Chairside Whitening Procedure Kit includes a 4.6-g syringe of whitening gel; six pretreatment swabs; two, 1.3-g syringes of Liquidam Dental Dam; protective lip cream; vitamin E oil; face bib; intraoral tips; gauze; one Satin Finish syringe of desensitizer containing potassium nitrate and sodium fluoride; and optional touch-up materials for home use (choice of Nite White ACP 16%, Nite White Turbo ACP, or Day White ACP 7.5% gel); tray case; instructions; and other accessories. Each kit also includes a light guide for use with the Zoom2 Chairside Lamp. The whitening procedure requires meticulous isolation of soft tissue from the UV light, followed by three or four, 15-minute applications of the whitening gel. Over 40 patients received the Zoom2 in-office whitening treatment, and all were provided with the Nite White ACP 16% maintenance kit. This product received a 99% clinical rating.
Product Features
All of the evaluating consultants were experienced using the original Zoom! in-office whitening. Consultants generally found the treatment to be very convenient and effective, producing predictable and, at times, dramatic whitening in a single visit. The system was rated very good overall for the completeness of the kit and the easy-to-follow instructions. Consultants indicated that one of the most useful improvements over the original Zoom! system was the configuration of the light and light guide. The Zoom2 light is portable, easy to position, and streamlined. The orange, oval-shaped light guide collimates the UV light onto the oral cavity, minimizing exposure to the operator. The guide contains slots that lock onto wings on the Zoom2 lip and tongue retractors and keep it positioned over the oral cavity, reducing the risk of UV exposure to the skin. As a safety mechanism, the light will not operate without the guide in place. Because of the amount of time required to achieve proper soft tissue isolation, a two-hour appointment is required. Several consultants suggested integrating saliva evacuation into the design of the system. Fewer than 10% of the patients remarked on experiencing any sensitivity during treatment, which may be attributed to the inclusion of desensitizers in the Zoom2 system. Little difference in patient sensitivity or whitening results was noted between the 20% and 25% gel concentrations. For patients whose starting shade was A3 or darker, Zoom2 treatment whitened teeth an average of seven shades on the Vita value-arranged shade guide. Slight rebound – loss of brightness – was experienced during the first 24 to 48 hours as the teeth rehydrated. However, final results were rated as excellent, and color stability was achieved when the take-home maintenance kit was used for the recommended three to four days after treatment. As with all tooth-whitening systems, when the cervical 1/3 of the teeth was significantly darker, it required more whitening efforts to achieve a uniform result. One hundred percent of consultants stated that they would recommend Zoom2 to a colleague.
Clinical Tips
- On-line training by the manufacturer is available and highly recommended.
- Review the patient’s medical history for the use of medications that cause sensitivity to UV light.
- Staff and patients should use the provided UV-protective eyewear.
- The Zoom2 Chairside Whitening Gel requires refrigeration. Remove material from the refrigerator six hours before use to reach room temperature.
- Provide each patient with a tube of Fluoridex toothpaste two weeks before whitening to condition the teeth and reduce sensitivity.
- Provide a distraction for the patient, such as television or a DVD player, to help the time for the procedure pass quickly.
- When using the take-home kit, concentrate the gel in the cervical portion of the tray for whitening of darker cervical areas of the teeth.
