Consultants’ Comments

  • “I could take impressions at my nursing homes and didn’t have to immediately pour them.”
  • “Detail was much better than alginate.”
  • “Reliable and consistent results.”
  • “The working time is a little longer than my current alginate substitute, which made it easier to get a good impression without worrying about distortion due to pre-mature setting.”
  • “I got voids in some impressions. I think it is because the patient said it felt like it moved easily in the mouth.”
  • “The set-up time was slow compared to my alginate material.”

Description

Silginat is an A-silicone, VPS material that has:

  • Numerous indications
  • Low tear resistance
  • High dimensional stability
  • Thixotropic properties allow it to flow well under pressure

Clinical Tips

  • Use this material to fabricate a provisional crown or bridge stint and you can keep it on hand until the final restoration is seated in case you need to re-make the provisional.
  • Dispense the material with the tip pointing down into the tray and do not lift the tip from the material, to prevent bubbles.
  • Make sure to fill the tray completely to the top. The material does not flow much once placed intraorally like some other materials.

Unique Attributes

  • The low-tear resistance makes it a great option for situations where there are concerns about loose restorations or teeth that there is a possibility of inadvertently removing with the impression. Also, it is a good option around orthodontics where using a material too stiff could dislodge orthodontic brackets, wires, or buttons.
  • The high dimensional stability allows the impression to last for weeks, and it can be poured multiple times without the concern of distortion.

Indications

  • Anatomical impressions
  • Opposing jaw impressions
  • Orthodontic work
  • Models for case studies
  • Preparation of temporary crowns and bridges
  • Fabrication of models for the construction of splints

Description

Cavex ImpreSafe is a highly concentrated disinfectant for alginate, polyether and silicone impressions. The solution is aldehyde-free and has a neutral odor. The manufacturer states that Cavex ImpreSafe needs only three minutes to kill bacteria, fungi and viruses and has no negative effect on the impression surface. The system includes a disinfection container, one liter of disinfection fluid concentrate, shipping bags and a timer. Each liter of concentrate makes 33 liters of usable solution. Cavex ImpreSafe was evaluated by 24 consultants in over 800 uses. It received a 96% clinical rating.

Product Features

Cavex ImpreSafe is easy for dental staff to integrate into their daily workflow. The three-minute immersion time is faster than that of other immersion disinfectants, and the timer included with the kit encourages compliance with soaking for the recommended time. Consultants commented on the lack of residue after rinsing. Seventy-one percent of consultants reported that Cavex ImpreSafe was better than their current method of impression disinfection, 79% would switch to Cavex ImpreSafe and 67% would recommend it.

Clinical Tips

  • Rinse the impression before disinfection.
  • Replace the solution weekly or when it is visibly contaminated.
  • Keep track of how old the solution is – write date of preparation in pencil on the top.
CLEARFIL™ SE Protect

CLEARFIL™ SE Protect

Description

CLEARFIL SE Protect is a self-etching primer/light-cured bonding system. CLEARFIL SE Protect contains the same proprietary technology and physical properties as CLEARFIL SE BOND with two additional features: long-term fluoride release and the MDPB monomer with an antibacterial, cavity cleansing effect. The introductory kit of CLEARFIL SE Protect includes 6 ml of primer, 5 ml of bond, a dispensing case, and accessories. Thirteen editors, seven of whom had previously used CLEARFIL SE BOND, evaluated CLEARFIL SE Protect over a six-week period. This product received a 98% clinical rating.

Evaluation Protocol

  • Thirteen consultants and editors of THE DENTAL ADVISOR clinically evaluated CLEARFIL SE Protect over a six-week period.
  • Over 150 restorations were placed.
  • CLEARFIL SE Protect was evaluated on a 1-5 rating scale:
    1 = poor, 2 = fair, 3 = good, 4 = very good, 5 = excellent.

Editors’ Observations

Manufacturer’s Instructions
The laminated flow chart is well illustrated with clear directions for clinical use. Application and curing times are printed on the dispensing case as an at-a-glance reminder.

Completeness of Kit
The simple system includes a convenient storage and dispensing container that keeps the two bottles together. A dispensing dish, light shield and application brushes are also included.

Dispensing
The storage and dispensing system is convenient. The flow of the primer and bond is easily controlled; however, firm pressure is often required to express the bond when little remains in the bottle.

Viscosity
The primer and bond wet the tooth evenly. The low-viscosity primer flows readily under gentle air pressure while the more viscous bond may require extended use of air.

Post-operative Sensitivity
No post-operative sensitivity was reported during the six-week evaluation period. Consultants found CLEARFIL SE Protect effective in the reduction of sensitivity when placed on areas of recession or similar areas of sensitive tooth structure.

Matrix Band Removal
CLEARFIL SE Protect
bonds to metal matrix bands, making the bands more difficult to remove than other self-etching bonding systems. Consultants used hemostats and firm pressure to assist in removing matrix bands. Preventing pooling of adhesive against the band was also helpful.

Editors’ Note:

CLEARFIL SE PROTECT was originaly evaluated by DENTAL ADVISOR under the name Clearfil PROTECT BOND in Vol. 21, No. 8, October 2004.
