Can I use a sandwich technique with a posterior composite restoration?

The sandwich technique involves the use of glass ionomer [GC Fuji II (GC America)] or resin-modified glass ionomer [GC Fuji II LC (GC America); 3M ESPE Vitrebond Plus Light Cure Glass Ionomer Liner/Base (3M ESPE)] as a base with posterior composite restorations and is popular outside of the United States. Because the glass ionomer has a coefficient of thermal expansion similar to that of tooth structure, it can minimize microleakage at the ionomer-tooth interface. THE DENTAL ADVISOR recommends the sandwich technique for medium and high caries-risk patients.
