It goes without saying that some procedures produce a lot of aerosols; we even call them Aerosol Generating Procedures (AGPs). Controlling them can be a challenge. Ho Dental Company designed the AiroPur Aerosol Suction Cup to combat this problem. The cup attaches directly to the HVE valve and is held by the patient in line with their lower lip. It is designed to be disposable but can also be fully autoclaved if desired.
Initial Insights
It’s great that the patient can get a sense of control.
The patient can position it where they want, rather than having it hang on their lip.
I think some patients might like that they can spit in it if they feel the need.
Patients said it was comfortable and easy to hold.

Sometimes, it feels like one prophy paste is just like the next. When they’re mixed together in containers, it takes an extra step of reading the tiny print on the foil to see if it’s fine or coarse and what flavor it is. CleanJoy® by VOCO America, Inc. is specifically designed in a “traffic light” color coding system where red is always coarse, yellow is always medium, and green is always fine, so you know what you are grabbing. The instructions indicate to use the green finishing paste after using the red or yellow pastes. Its Fine Dual Filler Technology reportedly causes less of a sandy feeling while being as effective as traditional pastes. It contains fluoride and xylitol and is available in three flavors: mint, caramel, and cherry, each in the traffic light color coding system.
Initial Insights
The mint is very refreshing.
Even the coarse paste was minimally gritty; it didn’t “crunch” as much as others.
It has a very smooth texture, almost like frosting.
I really like the traffic-light color coding. It’s much easier than reading the tiny print on the foil.

Previously, DENTAL ADVISOR evaluated GingiCaine® Gel Syringes and it received an Editor’s Choice rating of 97% and is a Hygienist Favorite. On top of that, it is now available as GINGICaine Fusion by Gingi-Pak. It is a topical anesthetic available not only in a jar, but also in a single-use syringe. The syringe allows for direct placement of the gel into the gingival sulcus. GINGICaine contains 20% Benzocaine and is infused with 2% Hemp Extract, which reportedly helps to immediately reduce inflammation, relieve pain and irritation. The onset is 20 seconds with a 30-60 minute duration and it is available in two flavors: strawberry and vanilla.
Injecting directly into the sulcus
The whole team!
Initial Insights
Very quick onset but it subsided in a reasonable time; it didn’t last longer than needed.
The strawberry and vanilla flavors are very mild and not medicinal; the strawberry one is especially pleasant.
The syringe was very easy to use. It works great on patients with deeper pockets.
I like that it’s a gel because some other injectable products are too runny.
It’s neat that not only does it provide anesthesia, it is also anti-inflammatory due to the hemp extract.

As a clinician working alone, it can be hard to balance a mirror, suction, and tools. The M7 HVE Suction Mirror by Golden Dental combines mirror and suction in one tool. Each kit includes 5 mirrors. The mirror head has 20 suction holes, and the handle is lightweight and hollow. A unique 3-axis rotating connector holds it to the tubing, which is attached to the HVE valve with the included adapter. The kit also includes replacement mirrors and mirror caps to prevent scratching, as well as a tool to replace the mirrors. The M7 Eva HVE can be placed in an ultrasonic cleaner and is fully autoclavable.
Very unique 3-axis
Good, clear view!
Replacing mirrors with the included tool
Initial Insights
I like how lightweight they are, and the 3-axis piece makes it very mobile.
Replacing the mirrors is very easy.
These mirrors suction nicely, especially when retracting the cheeks and lips. It was a very natural transition from my usual use of a mirror and saliva ejector.
As a patient, I liked how thin and smooth it was; when it touched my teeth at all there wasn’t any clicking of metal or any sharp edges.

Since the pandemic began, a focus on pre-procedural rinse has occurred. There are several choices on the market for patients to rinse prior to their dental appointment. XTRA PURE by UltraPure is a hypochlorous acid based rinse. This rinse (0.01% HOCl) is available in a 500mL bottle. Just 10mL are swished for 30 seconds in place of any mouth wash.
Initial Insights
The non-foaming texture makes it really easy to swish around.
There was a slight tingling on the tip of my tongue.
The rinse has a distinct chlorine flavor.

With concerns over COVID transmission in dental offices, there is a lot of focus on controlling aerosols. Cazoo Extraoral Aerosol Evacuator by SOTA Imaging is a uniquely-shaped reusable solution. It connects directly to HVE and rests on the patient’s lip. It does not need to be moved to access different quadrants of the mouth, and can be hooked to most cheek retractors. Cazoo’s geometric opening reportedly optimizes aerosol control by remaining closer to the working area without blocking the clinician’s view. At just $99 each, Cazoo is one of the more affordable options available.
Easy to set up and hold
Initial Insights
I love that it can be autoclaved.
My patient said she felt like it really did pull aerosols into it!
It’s not heavy at all, but I did have my patient hold it so it wouldn’t fall.
In my experience, most extraoral suction devices are loud; Cazoo is quieter than many and it’s very easy to hear over it.
Super easy to hook it up onto the HVE; fits perfectly.
