Sometimes, it feels like one prophy paste is just like the next. When they’re mixed together in containers, it takes an extra step of reading the tiny print on the foil to see if it’s fine or coarse and what flavor it is. CleanJoy® by VOCO America, Inc. is specifically designed in a “traffic light” color coding system where red is always coarse, yellow is always medium, and green is always fine, so you know what you are grabbing. The instructions indicate to use the green finishing paste after using the red or yellow pastes. Its Fine Dual Filler Technology reportedly causes less of a sandy feeling while being as effective as traditional pastes. It contains fluoride and xylitol and is available in three flavors: mint, caramel, and cherry, each in the traffic light color coding system.
Initial Insights
The mint is very refreshing.
Even the coarse paste was minimally gritty; it didn’t “crunch” as much as others.
It has a very smooth texture, almost like frosting.
I really like the traffic-light color coding. It’s much easier than reading the tiny print on the foil.

Many hygienists have experienced prophy paste spatter. Young Dental designed a disposable prophy angle (DPA) to combat this issue. Splatter Guard is designed to work at its best when used with the Infinity Cordless Hygiene Handpiece by Young Dental, but it can reportedly fit just about any hygiene handpiece. It has a webbed cup for prophy paste and a little fin just underneath to help catch splatter. It is available in two sizes.

Using Young Splatter Guard with the Infinity Hygiene Handpiece
No visible splatter!
Initial Insights
There was absolutely no chatter and it was incredibly smooth and quiet when I used it with the Young Infinity handpiece.
We tried a brightly-colored prophy paste so we could see if there was any splatter – there wasn’t!
It felt really gentle on my teeth; it didn’t vibrate at all!

Cordless handpieces can fit into many hygiene settings, allowing for the user to move comfortably without interference of a cord. The Infinity Cordless Hygiene Handpiece by Young Dental is cordless, and claims to last up to 4 times longer on one battery charge than competitor models. This handpiece also includes a Bluetooth foot pedal to control speed, replacing the need to use a second hand to adjust. A small light on the front blinks to indicate the charge level when prompted. It also comes with three nose cones and a non-slip holder to keep it still on the counter, as well as 25 disposable barrier sleeves.

Polishing going smoothly!
Using Young Innovations’ Splatter Guard DPA
Initial Insights
This handpiece is amazingly quiet and lightweight!
It has a really small footprint on the counter – I can tuck it away easily.
I like having a foot pedal to control it instead of buttons on the handpiece that I have to reach for.
When I used the Young Splatter Guard DPA, it was incredibly smooth. I tried another DPA brand and it didn’t seat all the way on the handpiece.
I like that it doesn’t vibrate at all on my teeth!

The Lotus Disposable Prophy Angle (DPA) has several features that make it unique. The first noticeable feature is the clear material; this allows the clinician to have a clear view of the mouth and of how much prophy paste is left in the cup. Below the flared paste cup is a spatter guard that catches paste and fluids with each rotation. Every outer surface of the angle is dimpled to help fluids and prophy paste stick to it.

Spatter caught on guard after using soft DPA
Initial Insights
Both firm and soft options kept polish from flying around, and I could actually see it collecting on the guard. I even used different textures of paste.
I was shocked that there was no spatter, even with very soft paste.
The guard doesn’t get in my way at all and feels really comfortable to use.
I definitely want to start using this on my patients in the future.

In my public health clinic, I did some extremely large composite restorations. You know those ones… they really need a crown but your only options are to attempt the world’s largest composite to hold onto it as long as possible or extraction. With this comes the challenge of finishing and polishing such a large restoration. It was not uncommon for my assistants to wander off as I was polishing because they knew my 4 or 5 part polishing regimen was going to take me a while to get the smoothness to the patient’s tongue as well as the shine I was looking for. Coffee break time may be cut short now with this new polishing system!
Here at the Dental Advisorwe recently received Composite Singles(Meisinger USA). According to the manufacturer these single-use polishers produce a brilliant luster on all composite materials with a unique new shape, the “squid” shape (see below). These polishers are a two-step system with a pre-polish and high shine.

Unique “squid” shape in high shine polisher
What were the Initial Insights of the Dental Advisor team and our editorial board? – Wonderful high shine! – The pre-polisher will clear out any and all scratches in your composite, but you can wipe out your anatomy if you over-polish. – The new squid shape is very unique and I found it nice around cusps especially… I can’t wait to see what the evaluators thought it was best used for!
