Description
3M ESPE Sinfony is a laboratory-processed composite light-cured under vacuum. It is a microhybrid composite with strontium glass and silica fillers. Sixteen Vita Classic dentin shades plus an array of enamel, translucent and opaque shades and colored stains are available. 3M ESPE Sinfony is indicated for anterior and posterior crowns, inlays/onlays and veneers. Restorations should be bonded to the tooth with resin cement.
Clinical Evaluation Protocol
- 125 restorations have been placed.
- Sixty-nine restorations were available for evaluation at five years.
- Restorations evaluated included 52 posterior crowns and 17 inlays/onlays.
- Restorations were evaluated on a 1-5 rating scale:
1 = poor, 2 = fair, 3 = good, 4 = very good, 5 = excellent. - Categories evaluated at recall are indicated below.
Clinical Observations
Resistance to Fracture/Chipping
During the fifth year of evaluation, one molar crown fractured, requiring replacement. Overall, during the five years, a total of two crowns have fractured. The five-year fracture rate is below 2%, which is less than many ceramics and other indirect composites.
Shade Match/Esthetics and Vitality
All restorations were rated very good to excellent for both shade match and vitality. The shades of 3M ESPE Sinfony have remained stable and resistant to staining. The restorations have retained a glossy surface.
Lack of Marginal Discoloration
Ninety percent of restorations received excellent ratings for lack of marginal discoloration. Slight staining was noted in the remaining 10% of restorations with none requiring replacement.
Wear Resistance
Surface wear was evaluated visually on the 3M ESPE Sinfony restorations and on the opposing dentition. Ninety-five percent of the restorations showed no signs of wear. No opposing tooth wear was noted.
