Description

CaineTips are individually packaged, single-use cotton swabs pre-filled with a 20% benzocaine solution for intraoral topical pain relief. Recommended uses include pre-injection sites; hygiene procedures such as periodontal curettage and deep scaling; relief of pain due to ulcers, wounds, or other minor mouth irritations caused by dentures or orthodontic appliances; and dental procedures such as impressions and x-rays. CaineTips are available in boxes of 100 and in three flavors: cherry, peppermint, and piña colada. Twenty-seven consultants evaluated cherry CaineTips in 775 clinical applications. This product received a 93% rating.

Product Features

All of the consultants who tested CaineTips were using a topical anesthetic before the evaluation. The concept of anesthetic in a unit-dose cotton swab was highly rated. The individual packaging of CaineTips helps prevent cross-contamination. Several consultants found that the individual packaging was convenient to give to patients for at-home treatment of oral ulcers. The ease of using CaineTips on patients and the simplicity of activation were rated as excellent by consultants. Many consultants stated that they would like CaineTips swabs to be longer for easier access to posterior areas. The viscosity of the benzocaine solution was found to be too low; if the tip of the cotton became over saturated, it had a tendency to drip. Seventy-nine percent of consultants thought that CaineTips were equivalent to or better than their current topical anesthetic. Sixty percent would switch to CaineTips, and 75% would recommend them to a colleague.

Clinical Tips

  • Do not allow all of the liquid to run to the tip; otherwise, it will drip.
