Initial Insights:
What were some of the thoughts of the Dental Advisor Initial Insights Team?
Very easy to mold to the patient’s dentition.
No impressions are needed. Patients would love this!
It is VERY pliable when first removed from the hot water, and it distorted; however, it was easy to mold back into the proper shape and fit onto the teeth.
Will this be comfortable for patients with a variety of occlusion classifications? Our patient’s premolars were not touching when her mandible was retruded. We are excited to evaluate more to find out!

Bruxism, which can cause sensitivity and damage to the teeth, is a common finding in the pediatric patient. Sova® Junior Night Guard by Akervall Technologies, Inc. is a remoldable occlusal splint designed specifically for children. Traditional night guards are both expensive and impractical for a child with mixed dentition. The Sova® Junior Night Guard can be molded as needed to fit the growing jaws and changing teeth of children ages six to eleven. Impressions are not needed and the guard can be worn on the upper or lower arch. The material is BPA, latex, phthalate, and PVC free.

I recently took a two-day course on occlusion. Most of the second day was dedicated to just TMJ disfunction and appliance therapy options! Flat plane splints, cuspid rise, anterior deprogrammers, soft splints… the list goes on and on. It’s enough to make your head spin. The one thing that all of these have in common is that most people do not want to wear them during the day, when just as much clenching and grinding is happening, if not more. Enter… Cerezen.
Here at the Dental Advisor we recently were contacted by the makers of Cerezen (Renew Health Ltd.). Cerezen is a facial and jaw pain device that you wear in your ears! Yes, you heard me right (pun intended), these custom made devices fit discretely into the ears and can be worn day and night.
When I first saw this device I thought it was somehow slightly separating the teeth by holding the jaw open from behind the condyle, but I could not have been more wrong. It actually utilizes biofeedback. Biofeedback has been effectively used for years in the pain management world. According to the manufacturer, When wearing the customized Cerezen device, the ear canal shape changes to that presented in an open jaw position. This then provides a subtle feedback to break the cycle of clenching and grinding and encourages your patient to relax their jaw.
What were the Initial Insights of the Dental Advisor team? – Great concept! – The fact that it can be worn day and night is a big plus. Studies have shown that daytime clenching and grinding can occur more and at greater masticatory strength than nighttime grinding. – I know while I am trying to create that perfect class II contact I am clenching because my jaw hurts after the procedure, I think I need to try one! – You have to wonder how comfortable these really are to wear all day. In my clinical practice, a lab fabricated night guard is the standard of care. With that being said, there are many times when I would like an alternative in-house option. At Dental Advisor, we recently received the SOVA® Max Nightguard (SOVA). This custom night guard could be a great option for patients in your practice where a lab fabricated night guard is not currently an option. Such instances may include: the need of a temporary solution while mid-treatment, use while a patient is being evaluated for TMD or musculature issues, acute discomfort, a patient you are unable to obtain diagnostic impressions on due to limited opening, or you need an option for those who just plain cannot afford a lab fabricated appliance.
The previously evaluated SOVA Aero night guard is a three time top product award winner for Best Temporary Therapeutic Device, and SOVA Max takes this technology one step further for tough grinders. The SOVA MAX Night Guard is 2.4mm compared to their 1.6mm SOVA Aero night guard. SOVA night guards are an “impression free” moldable material, is 30% thinner than conventional EVA night guards, and allow the patient to talk, breathe through, and drink while wearing.
What do our Clinical Evaluators, who are practicing dental professionals just like you, and their patients think about this product once it’s in their offices? Look for an evaluation in an upcoming issue!
