ZirClean®

ZirClean®

Product Description

We recently received ZirClean (Bisco) restoration cleaner. This material is designed for use in zirconia, ceramic, and metal restorations after intraoral try-in. It removes phosphate contamination from saliva, non-abrasively.

Initial Insights

What were some of the initial thoughts of the Dental Advisor Initial Insights Team?

  • Anyone placing zirconia restorations should have a plan for removing phosphate contamination and this material makes it easy.
  • Just express into the restoration, let sit for 20 seconds and rinse to improve bond strengths. Again, this material makes it easy.
  • The syringe is very convenient, but there is inherent waste in anything that utilizes replaceable tips.

Visalys CemCore

There is a growing trend in the dental materials world, especially in cementation, and that trend is making products more versatile. We recently received Visalys CemCore (Kettenbach Dental) here at the Dental Advisor. Visalys CemCore is BOTH a dual-curing adhesive cement and core-buildup material. Talk about versatile… is this the future of dental materials?

What would this mean to your practice? It means you only need to stock one material for cementing posts, placing cores, and cementing your final restorations! According to the manufacturer this material will adhere to any substrate including :

  • Precious metal restorations (e.g. PFM, Gold)
  • Oxide ceramics (e.g. Lava, Procera, Bruxzir)
  • Silicate ceramics (e.g. Obsidian, IPS Empress, IPS e.max)
  • Hybrid ceramics (e.g. Lava Ultimate, VITA Enamic)
  • Composites (e.g. Camaflage Nanohybrid Composite)

This material is available in five shades: Bleach, Universal, Translucent, Dark, and Opaque (see images below). All shades have matching try-in pastes (see image below).

Visalys CemCore is an adhesive cement. This means there is a separate bonding step. This system includes a tooth primer as well as a restorative primer that uses their Active-Connect-Technology. Their primers are extremely easy to use, only requiring a 20 second rub and drying with air. No need to light cure.

What were the Initial Insights of the Dental Advisor team and our editorial board?
– Although etching is only absolutely indicated when cementing to enamel, can use any kind of etching technique with this product. Dr. Sabiha Bunek (CEO of Dental Advisor) was excited to hear this, as she prefers to total etch whenever possible.
– Some of our board members are self-admittedly, notorious “mix and matchers” with bonding agents. The chemistry in this product does not allow trading out the tooth primer, but provides the strong bond strengths. Will they love the tooth primer as well as their current bonding agents? We can’t wait to find out!
– We liked the shade selection.
– Thin mixing tip allows for precise placement.
– The editorial board was abuzz about the versatility of this product, and were all excited to take it back to their offices to evaluate!

Bifix SE Cement

We all have those patients… the ones with the oversized tongue, hyper-producing salivary glands, and tiny openings that need a crown on #18. They are usually the nicest people in your practice too, so you feel bad that you dread to see them on the schedule for the crown seat appointment, but you and your assistant are still recovering from the battle you fought during the prep. There is no way you can keep the prep dry for an adhesive cement, so you want something user friendly and moisture tolerant… enter Bifix SE Cement.

Here at the Dental Advisor, we recently received Bifix SE Cement (VOCO). According to the manufacturer, this dual-cured, universal, self-adhesive resin cement is versatile, has minimal steps, low solubility, and is moisture tolerant. Additionally:

  • Easy to use. Gel-phase cleanup, no refrigeration, no hand mixing or trituration required
  • High bond strength and mechanical strength without an adhesive
  • Optional light cure mode
  • Compatibility with common materials such as Ceramic and Zirconia, CAD/CAM materials, PFMs and metal restorations
  • Efficient self-cure mode sets up completely without any light
  • Low 10 μ film thickness cuts down on adjustment time
  • Radiopaque for excellent identification under x-ray
  • Endo-tips for easy root canal access in every pack

What were the Initial Insights of the Dental Advisor team and our editorial board?
– Easy cementing without bonding, primer or etchant is always a bonus.
– The syringes are kind of small but the universal tips are nice.
– Slightly higher viscosity than other dual-cured, universal, self-adhesive resin cements we have evaluated.
– Nice, easy shade selection: Translucent (T), White Opaque (WO) and Universal (U).
– The low solubility is a big plus to hopefully show good long term stability, we can’t wait to evaluate it to find out!

TransForm Heat Mouldable Impression Trays

As a dental assistant, I found myself many times taking a torch to the distal extension of a plastic tray. I was trying to melt it just enough to re-mold and widen it without setting it or myself on fire. I was mostly successful.

We recently received TransForm™ Heat Mouldable Impression Trays (Astek Innovations) here at the Dental Advisor. These impression trays are able to be reshaped by placing the area you wish to mold in water heated to approximately 158 degrees for approximately 20 seconds. According to the manufacturer these trays are made of a strong material, are anatomically shaped, have finger rests, and are made of biodegradable material. Available in small, medium, and large trays in dentate and edentulous.

What were the Initial Insights of the Dental Advisor team?
– Very easy to mold once submerged in the hot water.
– Placing it back in the hot water made the material go back to it’s original shape. Very convenient in case you over mold.

Take 1 ™ Retraction Paste

Crown and bridge are a bread and butter procedure in most general dental offices. I want these procedures to be as predictable as possible; however, each clinical situation presents its own challenges. Different situations require different retraction and hemostasis needs. This is especially true in today’s digital dentistry world where gingival retraction is especially important to obtain clear margins on your scans.

Here at the Dental Advisor, we recently received Take 1 Retraction Paste (Kerr). This retraction paste is available in two viscosities. The Low Viscosity is recommended as an adjunct to your traditional two cord technique. The High Viscosity is recommended in situations where you can use it without the need for a cord. This paste contains 15% aluminum chloride and kaolin clay that provides hemostatis as well as gentle retraction. For further retraction they include retraction caps in the kit as well.

Take 1 Retraction Paste claims are that it is gentle, yet effective retraction and hemostasis in as little as 2 minutes (with a maximum of 10 minutes). They say it is easy to clean up with water and air spray without residue. Both materials can fit in any standard composite gun.

What were the Initial Insights of the Dental Advisor team and our editorial board?
– When expressing the low viscosity we were surprised at just how easy it extruded from the gun. It is very easy to extrude and place.
– You will have no troubles reaching the distal of tooth #2 with the high viscosity! The additional tip adds a significant amount of length to the compule.
– If you have used other retraction caps that were like very dense cotton rolls, you will notice a significant difference with the retraction caps included in this kit. They are very firm and more like a stiff foam material. We can see them firmly compressing that material into the sulcus and adding additional retraction.
– We tried a variety of composite guns and the material fit in all of the styles we had with no problem.
